Suffocating ISIS: Phase One of Raqqa's Liberation Begins

The United States seeks to take the lead again in the Syrian conflict and possess cards to exercise influence. Endeavors to liberate Raqqa can be understood within the context of the US relying on the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG). However, this move is met with objection from Turkey, which fears the future consequences of backing the Kurds, both for the future of the Syrian state and Turkey's territorial integrity and unity. Therefore, the escalation between the Turkish government and the Kurds is expected to increase and consequently exacerbate the state of instability in Turkey.
